What if you had the AUDACITY?

Today, I encourage you to consider what goals you would set if you just had the brash audacity to set them. This is an idea I lifted while reading the book The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. (Highly recommended if you want to get motivated to explore levels of effort that you haven’t experienced before!) We often don’t set truly ambitious goals because, as soon as we think them, our lizard brain tells us not to bother, we can’t do it. In fact, I’ll be the first to confess that when I want something badly, I’m more apt to avoid going […]

Defeating the Self-Perpetuating “Truth”

On our team, we talk a lot about limiting beliefs. A limiting belief is anything that you hold to be true—whether that is the case or not—that you then base you actions upon, and often they preclude you from doing what you are capable of or need to do. There is a particularly sinister type of limiting belief that I’ve run up against recently that I’m going to talk about today: The self-perpetuating truth. The self-perpetuating truth is a belief that is only true because you believe it. Or to say it another way: if you didn’t believe it, it […]

Do You Hope So or Ask How?

I was listening to sports talk radio in my car today, as I am wont to do. Since we’re in the middle of Tennessee, they can’t seem to quit talking about the University of… well, Tennesee. So they were talking about a football game between Tennessee and Alabama last season, in which the Vols were winning late, but somehow crumbled and blew the game right at the end. A man called into the radio show who was a Tennessee-born Alabama fan. He very succinctly said, “At the end of the game, Alabama fans didn’t wonder whether or not we would […]

Crucial Question: Who Do You Believe That You Are?

Yesterday I made a short video about how my view of myself had shifted and how that had affected my actions. This morning, as I listened to a local sports talk host whom I enjoy, he began talking about the old adage, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” That tied in nicely. This is a similar concept, but it’s internal instead of external. The concept there is that people will treat you the way they perceive you. Dress like an executive, and after a while, they’ll begin to see you and treat you that […]

Where there is no vision, the people perish, says an ancient Biblical text. Vision is crucial to the achievement of any worthy goal, whether you're an entrepreneur or small business person, blogger or athlete, anyone aspiring to leadership needs vision for success.

Do You Have Vision?

First of all, if you’re not a sports fan, just hang in there with me for a moment, we’ll get to the point, I promise. I was watching Monday Night Football on… well, Monday night. I’m sure many of you got to watch the same circus act that I did. Somehow, the Cleveland Browns managed to snatch the game from the jaws of victory, conserving their precious culture of having no vision and borderline refusing to win. A quick summary, for those who missed it: with only a few seconds to go and the score tied up, all the Browns had […]
